Campo de Calatrava, as we like to say,\u00a0“all in one place”<\/strong>.<\/p>

Not as attractive as other areas of the province of Ciudad Real (although the\u00a0Tablas de Daimiel National Park<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0SCA Calatrava Volcanic Fields<\/strong>\u00a0are located within this space), the Campo de Calatrava offers a biodiversity of great interest to birdwatchers and nature lovers. Dominated by the\u00a0Guadiana river<\/strong>\u00a0(today almost disappeared due its big ecological problems) and its tributary the\u00a0Jabalon river<\/strong>, the Campo de Calatrava hosts real hotspots of life, as the\u00a0SPA Medium Basin of the Guadiana<\/strong>, the\u00a0SPA Calatrava Steppes<\/strong>, the\u00a0Mudela Fields<\/strong>, the\u00a0Vicario Reservoir<\/strong>, the\u00a0banks of the Jabalon river<\/strong>\u00a0in Almagro and the\u00a0Reservoir of Vega del Jabalon<\/strong>.<\/p>

Campo de Calatrava is a\u00a0very anthropic land<\/strong>\u00a0(by La Mancha standards) where, surprisingly, the visitor can find healthy populations of large predators including over 14 pairs of\u00a0Golden Eagle<\/strong>\u00a0and 10 pairs of\u00a0Spanish Imperial Eagle<\/strong>, but this shire also hosts very rich populations of Marsh,\u00a0Montagu\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0and wintering Hen Harriers, whilst Common Kestrel and, crucially, the\u00a0scarce Lesser Kestrel<\/strong>, keeps colonies that are the best and biggest in the province of Ciudad Real.<\/p>

Other highlights are the common presence of large numbers of Herons (Squacco<\/strong>, Night and\u00a0Purple<\/strong>), Storks (including\u00a0several pairs of Black Stork<\/strong>), Grebes, Mallards, Avocets, Stilts, Little Ringed &\u00a0Kentish Plovers<\/strong>, Laughing & Caspain Gulls,\u00a0Great-Spotted Cuckoos<\/strong>,\u00a0Bee-Eaters<\/strong>,\u00a0Iberian Woodpeckers<\/strong>, Wood, Crested &\u00a0Thekla Larks<\/strong>, Wheatears such as\u00a0Black and Black-Eared<\/strong>, Blue-Rock Thrush, Iberian Grey Shrike,\u00a0Azure-Winged Magpie<\/strong>, Hoopoe, Spanish Sparrow,\u00a0Hawfinch<\/strong>\u00a0and a plethora of amazing Sylvia Warblers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Of particular interest is the\u00a0Special Protected Area (SPA) of Calatrava Steppes<\/strong>, which houses the best populations of\u00a0Great Bustard, Little Bustard, Pin-Tailed & Black-Belied Sandgrouse of La Mancha<\/strong>, including in its amazing birds\u2019 list other quality species very rare and endangered, such as\u00a0Spanish Imperial Eagle, Golden Eagle, Quail, Stone Curlew, Calandra Lark, Iberian Grey Shrike, Little Owl, Red-Billed Chough and Lesser Kestrel & Montagu\u2019s Harrier.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\u00a0<\/p>

1- The Campo de Mudela Fields,\u00a0<\/strong>home of the best cast of raptors of Calatrava and the\u00a0wildest spot<\/strong>\u00a0inside this shire.\u00a0Spanish Imperial Eagle, Golden Eagle, Bonelli\u2019s Eagle<\/strong>\u00a0and even\u00a0Goshawk<\/strong>\u00a0occurs in this beautiful and unspoilt place, but its large Holm Oak dehesas and their impressive gorges also hosts other interesting species such as\u00a0Black Stork,<\/strong>\u00a0White-Rumped Swift,<\/strong>\u00a0King-Fisher,<\/strong>\u00a0Golden Oriole, Hawfinch or Rock & Cirl Bunting<\/strong>. Common mammals in this space are Red Fox, Wild Boar, Red Deer and the ubiquitous Egyptian Mongoose. There is even a small population of\u00a0Iberian Lynx<\/strong>, the most endangered cat in the World, not in vain in the Campo de Mudela Fields are found the\u00a0natural springs of the Jandula river<\/strong>, and the\u00a0Sierra de Andujar<\/strong>\u00a0is located just south of this space.<\/p>

2- The Vicario Reservoir,\u00a0<\/strong>the\u00a0Tablas de Alarcos<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0Tablas del Congosto –<\/strong>all of them parts of the\u00a0Guadiana river<\/strong>\u00a0complex- and its swamps are a centre of activity for Egrets, Herons and other Waterfowl, but a great diversity of birds of prey appears in its surrondings providing a spectacle worthy of admiration:\u00a0Golden Eagle, Osprey, Black-Shouldered Kite<\/strong>, Red Kite, Marsh Harrier and even\u00a0Black Vulture<\/strong>\u00a0can be seen soaring in the open skies of this high school of quality birders. Around the Vicario Reservoir nature lovers will also find some of the\u00a0rarest orchids & wildflowers of La Mancha<\/strong>.\u00a0Water Rail, Spotted Crake, Kingfisher, Roller & Golden Oriole<\/strong>\u00a0complete the amazing birds checklist of thir remarkable wetlands near Ciudad Real.<\/p>

3- Calatrava the New Castle.<\/strong>\u00a0From its altitudes, this awe-inspiring castle offers\u00a0superb views<\/strong>\u00a0of La Mancha & Sierra Morena in a very evocative setting, and some very best opportunities to enjoy excellent birding, with quality species such as\u00a0Golden Eagle<\/strong>, Black Vulkture, Peregrine Falcon,\u00a0Black Wheatear<\/strong>, Blue-Rock Thrush,\u00a0Subalpine & Dartford Warblers, Hawfinch<\/strong>\u00a0or Rock Bunting.<\/p>

4- Calatrava the Old Castle.<\/strong>\u00a0From this ancient watch-tower, the visitor can enjoy superb views of the\u00a0Guadiana river<\/strong>\u00a0and excellent birding. 5- The Jabalon Reservoir and River.<\/strong>\u00a0Very close to\u00a0Almagro<\/strong>, this Reservoir is one of the best birding spots of La Mancha. Healthy populations of Waterfowl, the regular presence of quality Herons such as Night,\u00a0Squacco & Purple<\/strong>, roosting place for thousands of Cattle Egret, important stopover and resting place for hundreds of Shorebirds on their migration to and from Africa,\u00a0big concentrations of White Storks in summer<\/strong>\u00a0with up to two thousands of this beautiful bird, and hunting ground for some of the biggest predatory birds in Spain like\u00a0Golden & Spanish Imperial Eagles<\/strong>\u00a0are reasons enough for take time and go birding to this unique and underwatched place.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

THE VOLCANIC REGION OF CALATRAVA<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The large\u00a0volcanic rectangle of Calatrava<\/strong>\u00a0covers an approximate area of\u00a05.000 square kilometres<\/strong>, with vertices at the Valle de Alcudia, Montes de Toledo Mountains and the Cabaneros National Park. True heart of La Mancha, this pictoresque region, whose boundaries overlap with a much longer historical limits, has been associated with the\u00a0old military power of the Order of Calatrava<\/strong>, whose influence extended over most of the province of Ciudad Real and large areas of the northern side of Andalusia.<\/p>

In this vast territory have been counted more than\u00a0500 volcanic manifestations<\/strong>\u00a0and inklings<\/strong>\u00a0originated in the\u00a0Alpine Orogeny<\/strong>\u00a0due the ascent to the surface of basaltic magmas. With a\u00a0length of between 8 and 1 million years<\/strong>\u00a0(Tertiary and Quaternary age), some of these manifestations have come to very recent geological times, as attested in the Topographic Relations of Philip II (1575 AD) which collects the following words regarding the survey in the village of Valenzuela de Calatrava: \u201c\u2026 from this town is a hill called Cerro de la Sima, where, in some rocks, some hot and red flames appear as when a lime kiln is burned, with no smoke or flame, but it is showing the fire inside , which heat exits from these rocks, smelling \u201calcrivite\u201d from time to time, as when people throws rockets \u2026. \u201c<\/p>

Many volcanic eruptions are still today perceived around the Campo de Calatrava in the form of hot and\u00a0ferruginous springs<\/strong>, many of whom served as old spas sixty years ago, but, today, the visitor can walk without fear in these beautiful and scenic fields and enjoy some unique scenery shaped by telluric forces, some of wich can still be found like huge volcanic cones, perfect basalt drops or like a\u00a0\u201cmaar\u201d<\/strong>, a volcanic depression originated by violents hydromagmatics explosions that formed\u00a0beautiful and ephimeral seasonal lagoons<\/strong>, such as\u00a0La Posadilla, El Acebuche, La Inesperada (RAMSAR site), Caracuel Lagoon or the stunning Maar de Cervera in Almagro.<\/strong><\/p>

These places,\u00a0the only volcanic lagoons in Western Europe<\/strong>, host an impressive number of quality species, such as Little Grebe,\u00a0Black Stork<\/strong>,\u00a0Greater Flamingo,<\/strong>\u00a0Squacco, Night &\u00a0Purple Heron<\/strong>, Golden Eagle,\u00a0Spanish Imperial Eagle<\/strong>,\u00a0White-Headed Duck, Ferruginous Pochard<\/strong>, Red-Crested Pochard, Pied Avocet,\u00a0Kentish Plover<\/strong>, Whiskered Tern,\u00a0Eagle-Owl<\/strong>, Skylark, Thekla Lark,\u00a0Black Wheatear<\/strong>, Blue-Rock Thrush, Spanish Sparrow,\u00a0Hawfinch<\/strong>\u2026 Otters, Red Deers and Wild Boars the main big mammals that occurs in these chain of lagoons, using them for feeding, drinking or resting.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
